The Hunter Academy of Sport (HAS) proudly welcomed close to 100 young Indigenous athletes to Maitland Basketball Stadium on Thursday, June 26, for the 2025 Indigenous Talent Identification Day. This event, made possible through the generous support of Underwriting Agencies Australia (UAA) Santos Hunter Gas Pipeline and Maitland City Council was a resounding success, showcasing the remarkable depth of sporting talent across the Hunter region.

Students from a wide range of schools participated in a full day of testing and skills-based activities designed to uncover emerging athletic potential. The program featured a diverse selection of sports, including Aussie Rules Football, Golf, Basketball, Netball and Functional Movement Testing. Each activity was carefully curated to assess key performance indicators such as agility, coordination, endurance and sport-specific skills.

The Indigenous Talent Identification Day is part of a broader initiative aimed at creating equitable access to high-performance sport pathways for Indigenous youth. By identifying promising athletes early, HAS can provide tailored support to help them thrive both on and off the field. Standout performers from the day will be offered full scholarships to join HAS sports programs, beginning with a six-week training block in Term 3, 2025. These scholarships include access to elite coaching, athlete education and strength and conditioning services – critical components in preparing young athletes for long-term success.

Brett O’Farrell, CEO of Regional Academies of Sport Ltd, commended the initiative, stating:

“This program is a testament to what’s possible when community, coaches and corporate partners come together. It’s about more than sport, it’s about creating real opportunities for young people in our region.”

Now a key fixture in the Academy’s calendar, the Indigenous Talent Identification Day continues to grow in scale and impact. It offers a clear and structured pathway for aspiring athletes to progress through development programs and into higher levels of competition, including state and national representation.

The Hunter Academy of Sport extends its heartfelt thanks to all participating schools, families, coaches and partners who contributed to the success of the day. Their support plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of Indigenous sporting talent.

An additional Indigenous Talent Identification event will also be held in Muswellbrook later this year, with the date to be confirmed.
