The Hunter Academy of Sport girls softball squad had the opportunity to travel to Blacktown International Sports Park in Sydney last month to participate in the 2018 Academy Challenge.

The challenge was run over two days in June where the HAS squad played six games against five other Regional Academy squads and a visiting USA Colleges Team.

The weekend was a great opportunity and an invaluable experience for the athletes to participate against local teams but also international athletes. The team had the chance to apply their skills and talent against some tough opponents, and the tournament provided them with not only an experience, but also served as chance for the squad to prepare for upcoming tournaments that they will be competing in.

The squad will now look forward to preparing for the Australian Invitational Youth Games where they will compete against teams from Australia, New Zealand and USA over two days of competition in Newcastle.

There has also been some exciting news off field for softball with the remarkable HAS Softball Manager Chris Halpin being named joint winner of the Sport NSW Community Sports Administrator of the year at the annual NSW Community Sports Awards in June. These awards celebrate the extraordinary contributions made to community sport, for Chris’s outstanding and hard work to be recognised is well deserved.

The Hunter Academy of Sport would like to thank Softball NSW for the ongoing support and opportunities that it provides.
