The past few weeks at the Hunter Academy of Sport (HAS) have yet again been eventful, with big news on major selections in state representative teams.

Female AFL squad members Arizona Cross and Eloise Peterson have gained selection in the NSW/ACT under-16 state team.

The Academy Games AFL tournament, run in conjunction with AFL NSW/ACT, was held as a trial for the team, where selectors identified 22 female athletes from the Regional Academy of Sport (RAS) system.

This is the first year HAS have run an AFL program for females aged between 14-16 in the Hunter. The program provides recognition and motivation to identify emerging athletes, with an end goal of being selected in the NSW/ACT U/16’s squad.

In hockey news, HAS athletes Jamie Balding-Little and Lachlan Mills have gained selection in the Hockey NSW Athlete Acceleration Program (AAP) for 2018-2019. The AAP is aimed at talented athletes aged 16-18, where traditionally the highest rate of attrition occurs and when skill development is crucial to an athlete’s progress.

This is a highly commendable achievement for the two young athletes, as the AAP is a highly recognizable program developed through extensive collaboration with NSWIS and Hockey Australia.
