The 2016-2017 season has now finished, nominations are set to open in August for 2017-2018.

Program Coordinators & Head Coaches: Brett Murphy & Josh Morgan

Coaches: Chloe Mullaney, Krista Wawszkowicz, Lesa Mason

This program is headed by Josh Morgan and Brett Murphy. Josh has an extensive playing career, representing NSW and Australia in juniors and over 15 years in the NSW Waratah Championship,

NBL and SEABL competitions. He is a current member of the Newcastle Hunter’s Championship men’s team.

Brett is also a former NSW junior representative and made an early transition to coaching.

He has worked as the Illawarra Hawks Development Officer and with the Central Coast Academy of Sport. He has also coached NSW School teams for the past 8 years and has a degree in Exercise Science & Rehabilitation.

Specialist Guest Coaches with international experience will conduct some of the sessions, and vocational coaches may assist throughout the program.

This program provides Hunter based athletes looking to gain further individual development competition exposure that will assist them in their chances of gaining future state team selection and higher senior representative honours. The program is now officially recognised by Basketball NSW on the individual career pathway for athletes.

The HAS 2016-2017 program is open to bottom age under-14s (12-years) to top age under-16s (15-years) male and female athletes registered with a Basketball Association within the Hunter region.

Athlete Benefits

The following benefits will apply to those selected in the basketball program:

  • Over 25 hours of on court sessions to further develop skills;
  • Fitness program consisting of basic strength and conditioning;
  • 6 hours athlete education in sport specific topics, such as nutrition & psychology;
  • Targeted competition event, ClubsNSW Academy Games
  • Inter-academy training sessions
  • Squad training tour/camp

Athlete Uniform

Academy polo, playing strip, socks, and back pack. The uniform is to be worn at all squad sessions (training and educational) and is to be worn at competitions and events. Returning athletes that are re-selected aren’t required to purchase uniform items.


To be eligible to apply for a position within the basketball program, athletes must be:

  • Boys and girls born between 2002-2005 inclusive;
  • A representative player in the u14 or u16 division of the Basketball NSW Country Premier League (CPL) or  Eastern Junior League (EJL) in the 2016 or 2017 season;
  • Reside within the Hunter Region;
  • Attend school within the Hunter Region;
  • A current financial member of Basketball NSW/registered with Association
